Fund raising is all about decisions, who to support and why. I decided to write this post for the website and want you to know that I am not a beneficiary or even involved on a day to day business. I built this website and I chose House Gracia to do this for because they are the pointy end of the stick. They are right there in the trenches and the work they do every day makes a difference.
There are many charities and NGO's out there competing for your funds and I want to tell you how I decide which are the best charities to donate to. I will be building a few web sites a year to help charities with their fund raising efforts and my system for choosing the best charities to donate my service to is simple.
The best charities to donate to are not professional fund raisers.
There are non profit organisations that do what I call fundraising for other charities. Every step in the ladder means another lot of admin and salaries. It is a known fact that some of the most popular charities in the world spend more on fund raising, salaries and overhead than on the causes they support. Some of the directors of these charities earn more than many small business owners will earn in a life time.
These are not the best charities to donate to because the funding you are supplying is not getting to what call the pointy end of the stick. It is not getting into the trenches. The major beneficiaries are often the staff and management of these organisations. I have heard of organisations where less than 20% of the funds raised actually gets to the people who need it.
How I decide which is the best charity to donate to
I start by visiting the charity and having a look see. When I was approached to build this website, House Gracia did not ask me to do it for free. Garth was willing to put his own money into developing the website and they are happy to pay for their services. I liked this attitude and it made me more willing to have a look and decide if I thought this was the best charity to donate to right now.
I looked at their website and to put it in plain Pretoria North it was kak. They needed my help. I liked that as well, This wasn't a charity that was throwing money around for the sake of raising funds. I then visited the facility.
I saw first hand the children being befitted by House Gracia. I saw the facilities and I knew that this was the pointy end of the stick. I wasn't going help with raising money to buy the Directors a bigger 4x4, The fund raising being one on this web site is used to cover costs like water and lights, Bond repayments, food, clothing, toiletries and things the kids need.
I also looked at their wish lists, It wasn't about luxuries, In fact on their needs list is an item I will forever associate with poverty, I have mentioned that I grew up poor, haven't I? Apricot Jam is something I don't buy because I ate too much of it as a kid, that and Mixed Fruit Jam, so beloved by poor parents all over South Africa. They have 40 900g tins of poverty on their list of monthly requirements. I don't like this but it spoke to me of need. Surely no kid in the world will eat that stuff by choice?
These are the things that made me decide that House Gracia is the best charity to donate to in Pretoria today.
